Alliance Learning sent out a survey to the 300 of you who did not respond to the previous CFOT interest survey, and do not currently have the CFOT certification on file. These responses are what the company is using to determine the next CFOT training locations. If you have NOT responded, please do so. We either need to know if you are interested or not, so we can get future trainings scheduled. At this time, we don’t have many location identified that meet the minimum amount of people to entertain a class. She describes herself as “a mom, a lifelong Minnesotan, a Flight Attendant, a union leader, and a Minnesota State Representative.” She has fought for working families as a fair trade activist and champion of many pieces of pro-worker legislation. CWA Members Ratify Contracts with Verizon

On March 27, members in CWA District 1 and CWA District 2-13 voted to ratify contract extensions at Verizon, Verizon Wireless Retail, and Verizon Wireless Tech. IBEW New England, IBEW New York, and IBEW New Jersey, who bargain alongside CWA, also overwhelmingly ratified their agreements. The new agreements will cover members until August 3, 2030.

Both contracts deliver wage increases, increases to pension band values, more work for the bargaining unit, a significant number of new CWA-represented jobs, and a continuation of the work-from-home agreement with no givebacks.

“This agreement moves us forward in meaningful ways,” said CWA District 1 Vice President Dennis Trainor, “particularly in continuing to tear down the barriers that the company has put up between wireline and wireless and overall bringing more members into our bargaining units. I’m very pleased to be able to welcome CWA members in New York from Frontier Communications into the Verizon bargaining unit. This agreement isn’t the end of our work; it’s a very strong step in the right direction, and as always, we will continue the fight.”

In CWA District 2-13, the contract extension continues gains won in previous bargaining and includes the transition of Frontier Pennsylvania members into the Mid-Atlantic agreement.

CWA District 2-13 Vice President Mike Davis’s message to members: “On behalf of the CWA Bargaining Committee, we extend our heartfelt gratitude to the leadership and members of Locals throughout District 2-13 for their active participation, historic overwhelming yes vote, and unwavering support during this critical process. Together, we are stronger!”

CWAers Keep the Focus on AT&T’s Greed During March Madness

For the second week in a row, AT&T Orange Mobility members from CWA Locals 9421, 9423, 7901, 1122, and 4202 handed out informational flyers to attendees of AT&T-sponsored March Madness tournament games in Sacramento, Calif.; San Diego, Calif.; Portland, Ore.; Buffalo, N.Y.; and Chicago, Ill., respectively. The flyers call out AT&T for their corporate greed, spending millions of dollars to have their company logo featured all over March Madness promotional materials, yet refusing wage proposals at the bargaining table that reflect the real cost of living.

CWA and AT&T agreed to a contract extension after 95 percent of voting Orange Mobility members voted overwhelmingly to give CWA President Claude Cummings the authority to call a strike, if necessary. The contract extension expires on April 3.

T&T Activists Hone Organizing Skills in Memphis for Large-Scale Telecom Organizing

In March, local leaders and activists from across the country met in Memphis, Tenn., for a 2-day organizing training run by the National Organizing Department in collaboration with the CWA Telecommunications and Technology (T&T) sector. Participants learned basic organizing skills, role-played to practice those skills, and made plans for large-scale organizing in accordance with our commitment to organizing telecommunications workers.

All participants left Memphis energized and inspired to identify leads at key companies to grow the union.

SUNY Research Assistants Reach Historic Levels of Representation With CWA

Last week, 577 research assistants with the Research Foundation at the State University of New York (SUNY) in Buffalo voted 191 to 2 to join CWA. They are the last of the four university centers to join the union—making the representation of graduate assistants at SUNY nearly wall-to-wall. It brings the total of CWA Local 1104-represented research assistants to nearly 2,000, in addition to 4,700 teaching and graduate assistants at SUNY, the highest concentration since organizing began in the 1990s.

Organizers received assistance from CWA District 1 staff and CWA Locals 1104 and 1123. The CWA District 1 Political Department helped make sure SUNY and the Research Foundation took a position of neutrality, allowing workers to organize free from intimidation.

The majority of these workers are international student workers conducting scientific research at a time when their research and presence in this country are under attack. Those who participated in this union election went public and should be commended for their bravery.

Mental Health Workers Vote to Join CWA

Last month, mental health workers at Family and Children’s Services of Ithaca, in Ithaca, N.Y., formed their union with CWA.

A supermajority of workers, including clinicians, nurses, intake clinicians, behavioral healthcare coordinators, facilities workers, outreach workers, and clinic administrative coordinators, are requesting voluntary recognition from the company. They are seeking union representation to address issues common to the healthcare industry like chronic understaffing, low wages, and personal safety.

This campaign is building on momentum across the region after nurses at Cayuga Health won voluntary recognition earlier this year.

CWA President Claude Cummings Jr. (pictured above, at left) joined a panel last week to discuss the implications of burgeoning artificial intelligence and its threats to workers. The AFL-CIO Tech Institute held the Workers First AI Summit, focused on the impacts of AI on workers. CWA is leading the labor movement with groundbreaking contract protections against abuses of artificial intelligence used for surveillance, discipline, and content generation.

To the question of AI in workers’ everyday lives President Cummings responded, “The same flawed AI that surveils and manages people at work is being used to decide their credit scores or whether they are approved for a mortgage. Unregulated AI is not just a job issue; it’s a civil and human rights issue. Without transparency, human oversight, and guardrails, we risk flawed AI being used to shape a person’s everyday life.

“Collective bargaining over AI tools across workplaces, supported by government regulations, is vital for protecting people as individuals and members of communities, not just as employees.”

AFL-CIO Honors CWA Member for Women’s History Month

In honor of National Women’s History Month, the AFL-CIO is celebrating the work of women in the labor movement who are making strides to improve not only their community but also to improve conditions for working people across the country. This year, they have chosen to spotlight CWA Local 1180 Vice President Teesha Foreman.

Foreman has been a civil servant with the New York City Housing Authority since 2000. From shop steward to staff representative, supervisor, executive board member, and now second vice president, Foreman’s journey has been rooted in ensuring that women—especially women of color—have a strong voice at every decision-making table. She serves on the CWA National Human Rights/Civil Rights and Equity Committee and as a trustee for CWA Local 1180’s benefit funds.

From the Desk of the Assistant to the Vice President of CWA District 1

Across District 1, our members are feeling the strain. In New Jersey, state and local government workers are facing double-digit increases in healthcare premiums year after year in a broken State Health Benefits System. In New York, many of our members and retirees are being hit with costs that are simply unaffordable. And across the Northeast, we see how increasing cost of care is threatening our members and their families. At the same time, healthcare workers continue to feel the strain of understaffing and lack of resources as hospital systems cut costs — even while the costs to patients and our families just keeps going up.

This crisis is touching every sector, every state, and every job title.
This didn’t happen by accident. It’s the result of a healthcare system that treats working people like piggy banks. We’re stuck in a system that for too long has operated in the dark. When hospital CEOs and health insurance executives get to make all the decisions, and then elect officials who back them up, the result is higher and higher and higher costs for insurance plans to cover individuals and families, less bargaining power, and healthcare workers pushed further to the brink.
For years, our union has fought hard at the bargaining table to secure high-quality, affordable healthcare. But we’re at a tipping point, and this is no longer a challenge that can be solved through bargaining alone. This is a crisis — and CWA is not standing by. We’re fighting at the bargaining table and in the halls of Trenton, Albany, Hartford, Boston, and Washington, D.C.
We need to fix this broken system. We need accountability from the corporate and legislative leaders who have the power to change it. And we will keep fighting until every member of our union has access to affordable, high-quality healthcare.–Billy Gallagher, Assistant to the Vice President, CWA District 1

Verizon Contract Extension Ratified by Majority of District 1 Members

After coming to a tentative agreement with the company in early March during a third round of early bargaining, the majority of members in CWA District 1 voted over the past several weeks to ratify contract extensions at Verizon, Verizon Wireless Retail, and Verizon Wireless Tech.
Members represented by CWA District 2-13 in Mid-Atlantic, IBEW New England, IBEW New York and IBEW New Jersey, who bargain alongside District 1, also overwhelmingly ratified their agreements.
The agreements, covering roughly 9,000 members across fifteen locals in New York and New England, will extend the contracts through August 3, 2030.

Also finalized and ratified was the agreement between CWA and Verizon to move CWA members currently employed by Frontier Communications in New York into our Verizon bargaining units following the sale of Frontier to Verizon.

CWAers Throughout District 1 Dig Into What’s Behind the Rising Costs of Healthcare

The fight to strengthen our healthcare system spans across every single industry and every part of CWA — what we see every day at the bedside with services being cut or threatened with closure and workers pushed to the brink, other CWA members in telecommunications, public service, higher education, and more are seeing their costs for care skyrocket year after year.
On March 26, CWA hosted an online info session led by Michael Kinnucan, Health Policy Director for the Fiscal Policy Institute, to discuss why costs on healthcare consumers have gone up even while workers like us are continuing to be stretched thin and services closed.

Some big picture items touched on in the info session:The U.S. healthcare system is the most expensive in the world — but many Americans still go without coverage, and our health outcomes are worse than comparable countries. An increasingly corporatized healthcare system — not utilization — is driving up prices and administrative costs [1]Hospital prices are the single largest driver of cost increases, but, as many of us know, are not being invested in patient care [2]“We’ve been running a fifty-year experiment in whether we need government regulation or if markets can solve this themselves, and the results are really clear,” Michael said during the discussion. “Markets cannot solve this. We’re not going to get healthcare prices and costs that make sense by letting [insurance companies] bargain with a big hospital company every year in secret and letting that be the force that decides who gets paid how much for delivering healthcare. We need government intervention.”

Organizing Victory! Research Assistants Join CWA Local 1104

Last week, Research Assistants across all departments and disciplines at the State University of New York at Buffalo voted overwhelmingly YES to join the CWA Local 1104 by 99%. The organizing victory came as a result of several months of hard work by the Organizing Committee to talk with colleagues and build solidarity, and follows after Research Assistants at SUNY Albany and SUNY Binghamton voted to join CWA over the past year.
The nearly 600 RAs join the roughly 1,400 Research Assistants and 4,700 Teaching and Graduate Assistants who have unionized with CWA Local 1104 across the SUNY system.

Healthcare Workers Fight Back Against Service Closures and Land Huge Victory

In the wake of the so-called “One Big Beautiful Bill Act” that will slash federal funding for healthcare services, many healthcare facilities throughout the country are cutting services and staff, and even closing facilities — deepening the staffing crisis that we’ve already been facing for years.
Earlier this year, Kaleida Health in Buffalo, NY announced the planned closure or drastic reduction of several vital services throughout the region, including the Medical Rehab Unit (MRU). Kaleida’s MRU currently serves an average of 26 to 29 patients per day, and the planned closure had called for reducing beds to 16, likely eliminating more than 20 jobs and leaving many patients without access to rehab services.

“There’s just not enough medical rehab beds at Erie County Medical Center, and Catholic Health, and now here,” said CWA 1168 President Cori Gambini at a public meeting in February. “Everybody’s cutting those beds, right? The focus has lately been on acute care. So, we can save a life, and we’ll take care of you, and they do a great job, we do a great job here doing that, but when it comes down to rehab, you’re going to be on your own.”
CWAers have also shared powerful personal testimony about the vital importance of the MRU, and written dozens of letters to the New York State Department of Health about the dangers of closing the unit.

On March 24, CWA Local 1168 announced a major victory: the DOH has halted the Kaleida MRU bed reductions, and ordered Kaleida to keep the unit open for at least six months while an independent company conducts a community needs assessment on the issue.
This is not the end of our fight to keep services open and adequately staffed, and now we’ll need to ensure that the proposal and situation are thoroughly examined, but this is an incredible victory that shows the power we have when we stand together and fight for our patients and our facilities!

Solidarity = Power: CWA Local 1033 Ramps Up Efforts to Strengthen Member Power

Recognizing that the first orientation with new hires on the job is one of the most critical times to welcome them into the union and give them the tools to get involved and help us grow, Local 1033 New Hire Orientation (NHO) Ambassadors are stepping up to strengthen their own skills and came together on March 12th to discuss best practices.
The NHO Ambassadors training focused on how to best engage and personally connect with new hires, focusing on three concepts:Selling new members on the union vs. inspiring them to join and take part, and defining ourselves and our unionUsing personal stories and communicating our shared identity through our own experiences and our shared historySeeing the NHOs as the first in many engagements with the members, and how we can ensure that members stay engaged with their union

The group will reconvene in April to dig deeper into the training and their union story, as well as both the challenges and opportunities we have ahead of us.
Alongside the training, Local 1033 has held several Solidarity Days at different worksites over the past several weeks, with solid attendance and engagement from members at each location, including the New Jersey Department of Motor Vehicles and Law and Public Safety offices.
1033 leaders at both locations talked with members about Weingarten Rights, updates from their Healthcare Ombudsman, victories won in the most recently NJ State worker contract, the CWA dues structure, and more, to make sure that members have a solid understanding of their contract, their rights in the workplace, and the role of their union.

Both stewards and members came away from the events energized and ready for their next event!

Keeping Up the Fight to Close Healthcare Funding Gaps

On March 6th, CWA Locals 1122, 1133, and 1168 joined a huge coalition of unions and community groups in Western New York to hold a press conference calling on the State Legislature to include money in the NYS budget to address funding cuts impacting our communities.
“Medicaid cuts are directly worsening short staffing in our facilities,” said Brian Magner, RN and President of CWA Local 1133. “When positions go unfilled and workloads grow, patients wait longer, complications increase, and lives are put at risk. We are calling on New York State to increase Medicaid funding in this year’s budget to protect safe staffing and patient care.”

CWAers didn’t stop there — on March 23, Locals 1122, 1133, and 1168 again teamed up with our union family at 1199SEIU and NYS Assemblymember Jon Rivera to demand that the State do all that it can to bridge the gap left by federal funding cuts and make sure that our healthcare centers get what they need to keep services running.
AM Rivera is urging fellow legislators to pass the Reinvest in New York Health Care Act, which would put a 9.63% tax on profits that insurance companies take out of state, which would be redirected into patient care. He’s also fighting alongside CWA to fix our broken tax system to make sure that the richest New Yorkers — those making over $5 million a year and who received federal tax cuts through the so-called “One Big, Beautiful Bill Act” — pay their fair share to ensure that our healthcare facilities get the funding they need.

“We are no longer going to prioritize the financial benefit to a handful of super wealthy people, just so that people that are struggling can struggle all the more,” AM Rivera said at the March 23 press conference.

Local 1298 Testifies on AI in the Workplace

On March 4th, CWA Local 1298 President Dave Weidlich testified in Hartford, CT on two pieces of legislation in Connecticut this year: in support of SB 5, An Act Concerning Online Safety, and in opposition to SB 86, An Act Addressing Innovations in and the Responsible Use of Artificial Intelligence.

“A.I. will bring several challenges to our workplace that we will be addressing as it may be implemented by our employers. I presented the following concerns on behalf of our local.
It is becoming more commonplace for automated decision-making systems to be used in workplaces. Some uses are monitoring workers, assigning tasks, and evaluating performance; influencing decisions about hiring, discipline, scheduling, promotion, pay, and job security. While introduced for efficiency or innovation, they shape workers’ livelihoods without clear rules, transparency, or accountability, and must not undermine worker rights or replace human judgment in workplace decisions.
I commend this committee for recognizing the risks posed by unregulated automated decision systems to workers. SB 5 introduces crucial measures like notifying workers about electronic monitoring and setting guardrails around high-risk systems affecting their careers.

Strong worker protections are vital. As these systems become more embedded in workplaces, workers need a say in their implementation. Employees offer valuable insight into tools affecting their jobs and ignoring their input risks harm and creates costly mistakes. Automated systems should be a bargaining topic to ensure technology supports, not replaces, workers.
Lastly, real enforcement is necessary. If harmed by these systems or monitoring, workers need a clear path to redress, including a private right of action. With the right rules, automated decision systems can support workers and public services. I also oppose SB 86 because it fails to provide many of the important protections included in SB 5.”

CWA Local 1037 Members Unanimously Ratify New Contract

CWA Local 1037 members at La Casa de Don Pedro (LCDP) voted a unanimous YES to ratify their new contract on March 9-11, after more than a year of negotiations.
The new contract includes wage increases in each year, more time off, greater employer contributions towards retirement security, and more.
The contract will be retroactive to January 1, 2025, and run through June 30, 2028.

Local 1180 Calls for Action on Equal Pay Day

Equal Pay Day is observed each year to call attention to the staggering pay gap faced by women throughout the country. The day marks how far into the new year women have to work in order to match the average annual salary of men earned in the year before.
According to the US Census Bureau, New York has one of the lower gender pay gaps, and union membership also has a huge impact on lowering the gender pay gap. But across the country, women earn on average just 82% of what men earn. That’s why each year, CWA Local 1180 members turn out in force to rally at New York City Hall to call for action, including legislation in New York City, to help close the gap.
“Today is not just about looking back to see where we’ve come from but about looking forward to where we need to go,” said Local 1180 President Gloria Middleton, speaking at the rally. “It’s about recommitting ourselves to the fight. Because equal pay is not just a women’s issue, it is a worker issue! For all the women here today I say this: know your worth. Speak up for yourself. Support one another. Because when one of us moves forward, we all move forward.”

Deadline Approaching! Joe Beirne Scholarship is April 30

The deadline for the annual Joe Beirne Scholarship is one month away! Applications are being accepted through April 30th for one of sixteen Scholarships of $4,000 each for the 2026-2027 school year.
The CWA Joe Beirne Foundation was established in October 1974 by the Communications Workers of America Executive Board to honor the name and memory of the founding President of CWA, who served for more than 30 years. In his capacity as the first CWA President, Joe Beirne took great pride in the roles he played in the fields of education and learning and other areas of social concern. Following his death on Labor Day in 1974, the Joseph A. Beirne Foundation has worked to honor his lifelong commitment to education and progressive social causes.
Scholarship DetailsEligibilityCWA members, their spouses, children and grandchildren (including dependents of laid-off, retired or deceased CWA members) may apply. Applicants must be high school graduates or at least high school students who will graduate during the year in which they apply. As we see an increased presence of immigration enforcement in many workplaces, including some of our own, it’s important to know what your legal rights are at your job if you’re in a situation like this.

CWA Locals Across New Jersey Come Together for WILD Conference

On March 14 and 15, CWA members from Locals 1040, 1088, and others joined women from across the labor movement for the New Jersey State AFL-CIO’s 20th Annual Women in Leadership Development (WILD) Conference!
The event focused on leadership development, mentorship, and building strong connections across locals, unions, and the entire state to strengthen the labor movement as a whole.

Local 1170 Far Surpasses Fundraising Goals to Support the Rochester Community

CWA Local 1170 celebrated its annual Leadership and Lifetime Achievement Givers at its annual breakfast on March 13. Through the generous donations of 1170 members, the Local exceeded their campaign goal of $65,000 to the United Way.

Local 1181 President Honored for Exemplary Leadership

On March 24 Rebecca Greene, President of CWA Local 1181 was honored at the Labor Press Distinguished Woman in Labor Awards for her outstanding leadership, dedication, and service to the labor movement.
Rebecca began her civil service career in June 1991 at the Queens Hospital Center Emergency Room, as Supervisor of the Clerical Staff of the Emergency Room, helping people who struggled with acute medical emergencies. This experience taught her the importance of serving with compassion, dignity, and love.
Six years later Rebecca changed her career path and began working for the New York City Police Department Traffic Division. This also allowed her to complete her college education, earning an Associate Degree in Business Administration and a Bachelor’s Degree in Psychology.

Rebecca worked as a New York City Traffic Agent, issuing traffic summonses to vehicles that were parked in violation and directed traffic throughout the city. She became a Supervisor in April 2004, overseeing Compliance Agents who issue environmental control and parking summonses, and Agents who direct traffic, and supervising truck enforcement and the HELP unit. She also was tasked to assist in assembling a truck enforcement manual.
In March 2018, Rebecca stepped up to take on the role of President of CWA Local 1181, with former leaders of the local behind her, citing her skillset and fortitude.

Support a Union Member’s Fight for His Spouse

In October 2025, former President of CWA Local 3105 Josh Saslovsky and his family suffered a life-altering medical emergency when his wife Cori suffered a brain aneurysm. She was rushed into emergency surgery and eventually stabilized but only after suffering multiple strokes. She remained in a vegetative state on a ventilator for 27 days. During that time she underwent numerous brain procedures as surgeons fought to keep her alive. Cori is now facing years of rehabilitation and ongoing medical care.

The Saslovsky family home and vehicle will need substantial modification to accommodate Cori’s new needs. Doorways, bathrooms, and walkways will need to be rebuilt for accessibility. The family will need additional medical equipment, improved air filtration, and emergency backup systems to support Cori’s medical needs. There will also be additional nursing care required that insurance does not cover so that Josh may eventually try to return to work.

Josh, in addition to his union service as a Local president, has served as South Area Vice President and as a Partnership Representative for his Local. While Josh is focused on supporting Cori, the financial strain from medical bills and other expenses is significant.

CWA Local 3105 President Shawn Todd has issued a call for assistance from CWA members and retirees to help aid the Saslovsky family.

CWA Public Sector Workers Help Lift Bargaining Ban

Earlier this month, lawmakers in Virginia passed legislation lifting a 1948 ban on public sector collective bargaining, opening the door to union contracts for half a million public sector workers, including many CWA members. The historic legislation will apply to public educators, firefighters, corrections officers, maintenance workers, and others employed by local governments, school boards, and state agencies. The bill falls short, however, of extending contract bargaining to university faculty and other non-service employees in higher education.

CWA members and retirees have long lobbied against the ban, citing the need for public sector members to be able to bargain effectively for better pay, improved healthcare, and better working conditions. The bill will now go to Virginia Governor Abigail Spanberger’s desk for signing. The governor has the authority to make changes to the legislation and send it back to the Virginia General Assembly for further consideration.

According to CWA Director of Government Affairs Dan Mauer, members and retirees will continue to work with Virginia legislators and the governor’s office to fight for university workers.

Donations to the CWA Political Action Fund (PAF) have allowed for activist mobilizations and lobbying to keep the needs of our public sector members at the forefront of legislative concerns. Those actions have paved the way for recent wins on a range of issues in Virginia, including raising the minimum wage, a heat standard bill, paid sick days, paid medical family leave, a wage theft bill, Sunday voting, and more.

CWA Files Lawsuit Against FCC Over Media Control

On March 23, CWA joined with Free Press; the United Church of Christ Media Justice Ministry, Inc., and Public Knowledge in a lawsuit against the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) over its decision to allow the acquisition of media company Tegna, Inc. by Nexstar Media Group. The merger gives Nexstar control of local news stations reaching more than 80 percent of U.S. TV households, in direct violation of a congressional mandate that caps the national reach of any single company at 39 percent.

“Our members have seen time and time again what happens when corporations are allowed to consolidate media ownership,” said NABET-CWA President Charlie Braico. “In the service of Wall Street profits, newsrooms shrink, workers lose jobs, wages decline, and local news suffers. Communities rely on quality local news for information on emergencies, weather—and maybe most importantly, as a democratic check on political leaders. When we starve our newsrooms, we weaken our local communities and our democracy. This merger doesn’t comply with the law—and it will create an unprecedented shift in this country and dramatically change local television stations for the worse.”

United Videogame Workers–CWA Launch New Worker-Organizing Campaigns at GDC

One year after video game workers announced the formation of their direct-join, industry-wide union at the 2025 Game Developer Conference (GDC), United Videogame Workers-CWA Local 9433 (UVW-CWA) members attended the 2026 GDC Festival of Gaming to launch several worker-organizing campaigns across the industry and welcome dozens of new members into the union.

After a panel discussion about the historic rise of the game industry labor movement, UVW-CWA members, video game developers, and GDC 2026 attendees marched to the Yerba Buena Gardens to discuss the Game Workers’ Bill of Rights, a worker-led set of shared principles to create a standard for fair treatment, better conditions, and real power for everyone who makes video games.

Members launched a “We Don’t Play With ICE” petition to unite the industry in becoming “4th Amendment Workplaces” to protect immigrants and visa-holders from ICE agents. They also announced their inaugural Game Workers Conference, an industry-wide virtual-only event made for game workers, later in May.

“At UVW-CWA, we are continuing to shape the future of video game work in North America one year into our formation. We are committed to defining decent and dignified working conditions and compensation for our members and fighting for all game workers regardless of their immigration status,” said UVW-CWA Local 9433 President Aurelia Augusta. “These campaigns are just a small look into our plans for 2026 and beyond. We are excited to finally make video games an industry where the workers are the protagonists.”

DCA Piedmont Agents Tell Management: Keep the Pizza, Contract Now

CWA Piedmont passenger service and ramp agents at Ronald Reagan Washington National Airport were awarded the quarterly Customer Cup from American Airlines for their excellence in operations and customer service. But over two and a half years into negotiations for a new contract, members of CWA Local 2252 told the company: You can keep the pizza party; we’ll take a fair contract instead.

Per the Railway Labor Act, which governs contracts in the transportation industry, negotiations between CWA and Piedmont Airlines are now in federal mediation.

D.C. Nonprofit CWAers Strike for First Contract

Earlier this month, CWA members at Washington, D.C., nonprofit Asian Americans Advancing Justice (AAJC) walked off the job in a daylong strike over stalled first contract negotiations. The members formed the AAJCollective under The Washington-Baltimore News Guild (TNG-CWA Local 32035) in 2024 and have been in bargaining for a year and a half.

AAJCollective members engaged in the strike action over proposed language from management that would cap annual salary increases at 3 percent, with most employees receiving raises of less than 2.5 percent per year. Despite concessions by the union on a number of issues, management has proven intractable on the issue of adequate pay, while at the same time spending more than $800,000 on external consultants in 2024 alone, alongside continued promotions and expansion of executive leadership.

Members are standing together to make one thing clear: a contract that falls short of fair and sustainable terms is unacceptable.

Tell The New York Times To Let Rich Quan Care for His Father

Rich Quan is a certified caregiver for his father, who is 96 and suffers from advanced Alzheimer’s disease. Rich is also an engineer at The New York Times and a member of the New York Times Tech Guild (TNG-CWA Local 31003). He provides vital daily care for his father while, at the same time, working efficiently out of his home. Despite a provision in the Tech Guild contract providing for remote work for caregiving and Rich’s demonstrated ability to be an efficient remote worker, Times management has directed him to return to the office and unilaterally denied his appeal.

Stand with the Tech Guild and urge management to grant Rich a remote work accommodation.

No worker should be forced to choose between a paycheck and the well-being of their loved ones.

AT&T Orange Mobility Members Authorize a Strike if Necessary

CWA members under the AT&T Orange Mobility contract announced today that they have voted overwhelmingly to give CWA President Claude Cummings the authority to call a strike if negotiations between CWA and the telecom company fail to reach an agreement. The strike authorization vote comes as CWA’s contract with AT&T, covering approximately 9,000 Orange Mobility members across five CWA districts, is set to expire at midnight ET on Friday, March 20.

“Mobility workers are on the frontlines for a multibillion-dollar corporation, working on the sales floor, in homes, and out in the field to connect customers to the rest of the world,” said CWA District 1 Vice President Dennis Trainor. “The results of the strike authorization vote send a clear message to AT&T Mobility management—our members know the value of their labor and are united, informed, and prepared to reject corporate greed and do what it takes to win the strong contract they deserve.”

CWA members at AT&T will continue to hold the company accountable on a wide range of issues that directly impact workers, including job security, work-life balance, wages that meet the real cost of living, adequate benefits, and protections on the job. Members, like those at CWA Local 4900 (pictured above), have been mobilizing in support of their bargaining team.

“We bring in a majority of their sales and other services,” Lindsey Wilkerson, CWA District 4 Division 1 Representative, told 14 News in Evansville, Ind. “We deserve fair pay, livable wages, and to not live paycheck to paycheck, and that’s where we’re at right now: paycheck to paycheck. We can barely make it.“

To underscore the reach of AT&T’s corporate greed, Orange Mobility members are planning to hand out informational flyers at March Madness games across the country, sponsored by the company, to inform the public that AT&T seems to have money for everything except paying its workers.

Members will continue to work under their current contract as CWA continues negotiations with AT&T.

CWA District 4 Members Ratify Contract with AT&T Midwest

Last week, CWA members voted decisively to ratify a tentative agreement with AT&T Midwest. The four-year agreement will take effect on April 12.

The new contract locks in significant improvements, including wage increases, more options for healthcare, annual wellness incentives, and improved working conditions.

“This agreement takes a major step forward in improving the lives of every member it covers,” said CWA District 4 Vice President Linda L. Hinton. “Just as importantly, it preserves language hard fought through decades of collective bargaining and solidarity including protecting employment security language.

CWA Legacy T Members Ratify New Contract With AT&T

Last week, CWA Telecommunications and Technologies (T&T) Vice President Lisa Bolton announced that Legacy T members with AT&T voted overwhelmingly for contract ratification. The new contract includes pay increases compounding over the life of the contract, improved healthcare options, bereavement leave to include distant relatives and close friends, and the creation of a joint committee to discuss potential impacts of artificial intelligence on members. This contract constitutes the largest wage increase this unit has received in four decades!

Members showed incredible solidarity and support for their bargaining team through mobilization actions. The team included CWA T&T Assistant to the Vice President and Bargaining Chair Brian Sawyer, CWA T&T Staff Representative Kara Hutchason, CWA Local 4252 President LaNell Piercy, CWA Local 13500 President Cindy Neumeyer, CWA Local 7250 Member Shari Wojtowicz, CWA Local 3250 President Barbara Tolbert, and CWA Local 7750 President Chris Roth.

CWA Legacy T members on the island of Puerto Rico also voted to ratify their contract with AT&T, locking in wage increases, significant healthcare advancements, and improved retirement benefits.

UPTE-CWA Members Rally in Honor of Slain Union Sibling

On March 5—nearly three months after University Professional and Technical Employees (UPTE)-CWA Local 9119 member Alberto Rangel was stabbed and killed on the job by a patient, more than 200 UPTE-CWA members and supporters came together to demand action: the University of California, San Francisco (UCSF) must act to ensure this never happens again.

According to UPTE-CWA’s workplace safety survey, 90 percent of UCSF social workers have experienced some type of threat, assault, or intimidation on the job, whether physical, sexual, or verbal. Another 81 percent said they feel unsafe at work at least once a month, and 90 percent reported feeling unsafe at work to management at least once. In at least half of those cases, management retaliated, responded in a retaliatory manner, failed to address the concern, or acted only after what workers considered an unreasonable delay.

UPTE-CWA member Alejandro Alvarez described the traumatic experience of trying to pull the attacker off Alberto, and members shared powerful testimonials about the need for workplace safety improvements.

TDS Workers in N.C. Vote to Join CWA

Last week, workers at TDS Telecom, LLC (TDS) in Mooresville, N.C., voted overwhelmingly to join CWA. They are joining TDS coworkers based in Utah, Wisconsin, and Kentucky who are already members of CWA. This organizing win is part of a long-standing strategy to help broaden our telecommunications footprint as we call for telecom companies to employ highly trained, local, union-represented technicians rather than low-wage contractors. CWA will also have greater numbers, allowing for more leverage during contract negotiations.

At the CWA 80th Convention last August, members voted to adopt a resolution committing us to organizing our core industry. This is just one more step in fulfilling that commitment.

The organizing drive was relatively quick, with help from Utah TDS members. The TDS CEO and Human Resource directors hosted a series of captive audience meetings to dissuade workers from joining the union. However, the TDS workers demonstrated their solidarity and refused to allow management to monopolize their time.

NewsGuild-CWA Joins Call for Release of Abducted Journalist

Earlier this month, the NewsGuild-CWA joined a coalition of 40 civil-society and press-freedom organizations to condemn the abduction and detention of Nashville journalist Estefany Rodriguez by U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE).

Rodriguez was detained on March 4, 2026. ICE produced no warrant during her arrest; it was produced only after she was in custody. Rodriguez fled to the United States from her native Colombia in 2021 after facing threats for her coverage of armed militia groups. She arrived on a tourist visa and applied for political asylum in the United States. Rodriguez was on a path to citizenship and had a pending green card application through her husband, who is a U.S. citizen, as well as a pending asylum application.

Rodriguez’s detention is part of a broader erosion of democratic norms and human rights in the United States, in which immigration authorities are increasingly being used to chill free expression and First Amendment rights. This practice must stop.

April 22: Know Your Rights in the Workplace

Join us for our next virtual “Know Your Rights” training (conducted over Zoom) on Wednesday, April 22, at 7pm to hear from lawyers from the AFL-CIO, covering constitutional rights in and out of the workplace and how they apply to immigration enforcement, protesting and other acts of civil resistance.
